TV & Monitor Recycling Trial Program

Got an old TV or Monitor gathering dust?

If you live in the Huon Valley or Brighton municipality, you can now do more than just clear some space at home—you can help shape the future of e-waste recycling in Tasmania.

Resource Work Cooperative is running a 12-month trial to better understand how televisions and computer monitors can be recovered, reused and recycled. By dropping off your unwanted TV or monitor at your local council transfer station, you’re contributing to a project that could improve how these items are managed across the state.

So why is this trial needed?

 

Unlike many other electronic items, televisions and monitors are surprisingly difficult to recycle due to their size and high volume of plastic, most of which are hard to recycle types (HIPS and ABS). At the moment, the cost and effort involved often outweigh the value of the materials that can be recovered, making them one of the more challenging forms of e-waste to process.

Until the end of April 2027, every TV and monitor collected through this trial will help build a clearer picture of what’s possible. We’ll be measuring things like the types of items received, how long they take to process, how much material can be recovered, and where those recovered materials end up. That information will help determine whether TV recycling can become a practical long-term service and guide future investment in Tasmania’s resource recovery systems.

Whenever possible, items that are still in good condition will be assessed, safety tested and prepared for reuse, giving them a second life instead of sending them straight into the recycling process. Items that can’t be reused will be carefully dismantled so their individual materials can be recovered wherever possible. 

This trial is about more than recycling old electronics. It’s about exploring ways to recycle more difficult items locally. The knowledge gained could help expand e-waste recycling programs and even support the recovery of other products that are currently deemed too difficult to process.
