A-Z Donation Guide
Before bringing donations to the tip shop, you can check here to see if we will accept them.
Each item category has been assigned a colour:
Green – We will always take these items, regardless of condition or whether they are working. If they cannot be re-sold, they will be broken down into their component parts for recycling. Always bring us these!
Yellow – We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition. We will usually only refuse these items if they are in bad condition and cannot be re-sold, or if we have been overwhelmed with that type of item and have more than we can sell. It’s always worth bringing these items to our dropoff, rather than putting them in landfill.
Orange – We usually don’t accept these items, but we may make an exception if they are very high quality, unique or rare! It’s could be worth a shot with these items if they are good quality or interesting!
Red – We do not accept these items. Most items in this category are either hazardous, dangerous, or there is a reason that we can’t sell them.

Accessories
Belts, Scarves, Gloves, Hats, Socks, etc.
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.
Air Conditioners
We always accept these items, regardless of condition, or whether they are working. If they cannot be re-sold, they will be broken down into their component parts for recycling.
Alcoholic Beverages
We are unable to accept these items.
Ammunition
We are unable to accept these items.
Angle Grinder Blades
We are unable to accept these items.
Animal Traps
We are only able to accept cage traps.
Most other animal traps are illegal in Tasmania:
- Leg hold traps
- Steel jawed traps
- Neck snares
- Hook-operated cat traps
Apiary Equipment
We can only accept apiary (beekeeping) equipment if it is brand new and unused.
Asbestos
We are unable to accept asbestos.
Asbestos can be disposed of at the McRobies Gully Waste Management Centre (the tip) if it is properly wrapped.
Artwork
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.

Batteries - Household
We are unable to accept this item.
Household batteries can be disposed of at the City of Hobart Waste Transfer Station, just up the road from us.
BBQs
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.
Bedding
Sheets, blankets, doonas, pillowcases etc.
We generally accept this item if it is in good, reusable condition.
Beds
Bed frames and bases
We generally accept this item if it is in good, reusable condition.
Please note that we cannot accept bunk beds.
Beehives And Beekeeping Equipment
We can only accept beekeeping equipment if it is brand new and unused.
Belts

Bicycle Helmets
We are unable to accept these items.
Bicycles
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.
Bikes can also be donated to the Hobart Bike Kitchen, but only during their hours of operation. Please view their website for details:
Blankets
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.
Blinds
Roller blinds, venetian blinds, vertical blinds etc.
We usually don’t accept these items, but we may make an exception if they are very high quality, unique or rare!
Blinds must have their mounting hardware attached, must come with cord guides and/or cleats and have the original warning label attached to the cord.
Books
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.
Bottle Tops (HDPE Plastic Type 2)
Plastic bottle tops and containers marked with the Number 2 recycling symbol.
We are a collection point for Plasticus Tasmania.
Plasticus is a local operation run on Hobart’s Eastern shore.Â
The plastic is shredded, heated and processed into new products which are sold locally.
Plasticus collect all plastic that has the Number 2 recycling symbol on it. They ask that any containers have labels removed, and everything has been washed.

Carpet

Cassette Tapes
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.
Please note that we don’t accept home-recorded tapes.
We accept blank tapes if they are sealed in their original packaging.
CDs
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.
Please note that we don’t accept home-recorded (‘burnt’) CDs.

CDs - Pirated

Chemicals - Hazardous
We are unable to accept these items.
Includes acids, alkalis, pesticides, herbicides, medicines, paints containing lead etc.
Children's Toys
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.
Christmas Decorations and Lights
We usually don’t accept these items, but we may make an exception if they are very high quality, unique or rare!
Christmas items generally only sell during November and early-mid December. We are more likely to accept these items during these months.
Clothing
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.
Coat Hangers
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.

We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.
Computers
We always accept these items, regardless of condition, or whether they are working. If they cannot be re-sold, they will be broken down into their component parts for recycling.
Concrete
We do not accept pieces of concrete, they should be disposed of at the City of Hobart Landfill.
We do accept concrete garden pots, bird baths, sculptures etc. if they are in good reusable condition.
Our staff will refuse any concrete items that they suspect may contain asbestos.
Corflute Signs

Corrugated Iron
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.
Cosmetics
We cannot accept open containers of makeup/cosmetics. We can accept makeup/cosmetics if it is in a sealed, unopened container and is not expired.
Couches

Cupboards
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.

Dryers

DVDs - Pirated
We are unable to accept these items.

Electric Blankets
We are unable to accept these items.
It is illegal to sell second-hand electric blankets.
Electrical Cables And Cords
We always accept these items, regardless of condition, or whether they are working. If they cannot be re-sold, they will be broken down into their component parts for recycling.
Electronic Appliances
We generally accept these items if they are in good, reusable condition.
Generally we only accept appliances if they are in working condition. However, we may make an exception for items that are repairable, or have valuable parts.
Ewaste
Computers, Laptops, Tablets, Routers, Mobile phones, Servers
We always accept these items, regardless of condition, or whether they are working. If they cannot be re-sold, they will be broken down into their component parts for recycling.
We also accept most monitors if they are in working condition.
Unfortunately we are not able to accept printers, photocopiers or scanners.

Ovens (Electric)
We can accept electric ovens if they are in good working condition, and can be plugged in using a standard plug.
We cannot accept ovens that are required to be wired in to mains power, as we are unable to test them for electrical safety.
Ovens (Gas)
We usually don’t accept these items, but we may make an exception if they are very high quality, unique or rare!

Paint
We can accept paint if it is in its original container, and if the container is at least half full (or a third full for larger containers of 10L or more).
The container must be intact and not leaking. Excessively rusty paint cans and paint that has dried up cannot be accepted.
